second-year design-build
New Jersey School of Architecture, Newark
As part of the inaugural year of the second-year design-build program at the New Jersey School of Architecture, four 'Parklets' destined for Newark's four outer wards were imagined, drawn, and constructed by the students.
During the course of the semester, the studio (led by Ross) explored and prototyped construction systems that were easy to disassemble, transport, and reconfigure for new sites and contexts. The studio learned together through making; many students (having never before used power-tools) came to be proficient on-site collaborators.
Utilizing standard 2x4's and a large number of cut-off 2x2's from the other builds, the students came in significantly under-budget for their final design. The largest expenses were in the marine-grade ply base panels and the paint.
